HAS HE EVER NOT LOOKED LIKE THIS?: Thurston Moore at Lollapalooza '95
Lollapalooza started with a genuinely exciting bang. Just the idea of having hip-hop, Brit-pop, and grunge on the same stage was revolutionary enough. That many of the bands were coming straight up from the alternative underground and could never have dreamed of playing to the thousands of fans Lollapalooza was capable of drawing made it all the better. But, as with most good things, the touring alternative festival seemed to start losing its way as fewer and fewer chances were taken with the booking and the acts themselves seemed there merely as a promotional venture. And then came 1995. The miracle year. Sonic Youth were the headliners. Pavement, Beck, Hole, Elastica, and the Jesus Lizard were all main-stage acts. It was the very heart of the indie side of the alt-underground, all brought together on one stage, and for one moment in time, it really did feel like something major was happening. Unfortunately, too many people came to the Tweeter Center to see the Courtney Love show and left before Sonic Youth even started their set. And it may have been the least lucrative of all the Lollapalooza tours. Who cares: it happened. And nobody can take that away.
