Early in Geralyn Pezanoski's documentary, a news clip shows George Bush proclaiming, "The world saw this tidal wave of disaster descend upon the Gulf Coast, and now they're gonna see a tidal wave of compassion." Bang-up job you did there, W. Of all the FEMA fuck-ups in the wake of Katrina, one little-told tale — and one of narrow interest — is the plight of cats and (mostly) dogs. Residents may have been hastily evacuated, but no plan was in place to save their best friends, 150,000 of whom died. Enter a small, dedicated army of volunteers who rescued the abandoned animals. Pezanoski focuses on the storm after the storm, when it dawned on the people who had lost everything that that included their beloved pets. Why? Watch, animal lovers, and be stupefied.
