Serious dub phase

Jahtari and its Net seven-inch series

I’m not sure whether it’s stubborn denial of the cold weather or full acceptance of my unemployment, but I’m going through a serious dub phase right now. Given that my turntable is kaput, you’d think this little fling would be short-lived, but Jah transcends format issues. After scoring a copy of Disrupt’s Foundation Bit (the flyest crusty computer dub ever to escape Germany), I did some digging through the dubster’s own label, Jahtari, and its Net seven-inch series — which comes complete with unnecessary fake vinyl noise. Here’s some of what’s available at jahtari.org.

Disrupt, “Blast You to Bits”
This track appears on Foundation Bit, but in slightly less disgustingly awesome form. It sports “SEGA offbeats” and the sounds of a dying hard drive, and its gritty gravitas is only enhanced by a generous Tron sample, which poses the essential question: “If I don’t have a user, then who wrote me?”

Illyah & Ltd. Candy, “Fight the Formation”
When honkin’ Hungarian oscillators and smoldering lady vocals come together — well, there’s no guarantee. But Illyah seems to know what he’s doing, as this wispy yet dubstantial gem attests.

Fleur Earth w/Gringo Starr, “Brennen Euch Ab”
A riddim ganked from Disrupt provides the basis for this slightly sluggish but enjoyable chill joint. The highlight is the thin little ribbon of Fleur Earth’s vocal, which vanishes leisurely, like a bong hit through an open window.

Disrupt, “International Karate Championship”
The modest debut of the Net seven-inch series is based on the theme to International Karate, which was composed by Ron Hubbart for the Commodore 64. Although nobody’s likely to get all that irie with King Hubby here (it sounds sort of budget), it’s entertaining for a few seconds.
