Notes on Birds and Batteries, Perennials, and the F Yeah Tour

Birds and Batteries

Three or so years ago, Mike Sempert up and moved to San Francisco, taking his creative moniker BIRDS AND BATTERIES with him — which was too bad for us. The good news is that three years have found Sempert’s already ambitious approach honed to rough-edged finery. (B&B call themselves a “well-soiled machine,” equally influenced by Gary Numan and Randy Newman.) The extra good news is that B&B will return to Boston (well, Somerville) for a show this Saturday, July 5, at P.A.’s with PEPI GINSBERG and San Antonio’s HACIENDA. . . . Next Thursday starts a month-long residency at P.A.’s from Boston’s PERENNIALS (who are cobbled from members of such varied outfits as the CLICK FIVE, the BLACK FREIGHTER, FURVIS, and SLICK PIG but sound like the sum of none of them). In addition to kicking off the residency, the band will also be kicking off the planet, vanishing into an ominously labeled “retirement.” Well, that sucks. All we can say is, get some Perennials while you can — and the July 10 date is a good place to start, since they’ll be joined by 28 DEGREES, TAURUS, PAPARAZZI, and GET LAID. . . . If you’re tired of bands breaking up or leaving town, do something clever and beat them to the punch by heading to the Tinderbox in Brattleboro on July 10 for the closest appearance of the F YEAH TOUR, an enthusiasm-riddled throwdown featuring MATT & KIM, MONOTONIX, TEAM ROBESPIERRE, and BRUTAL KNIGHTS. (Then come back. Please?)
