In part because it sounds a lot like the shoegaze and '80s dreampop bands she selects to fill her soundtracks, the debut full-length from Boston-gone-Brooklyn duo Minks floats along like a Sofia Coppola movie - delicate and listless, topped with a glossy and charming overcoat, but lacking in substance. Minks draw from a grab bag of beloved influences: "Our Ritual" is a blatant ode to the Cure, the wall of distortion behind "Bruises" calls on Loveless-era My Bloody Valentine, and the sparse, echoey industrial clack thrown in at the end of "Funeral Song" offers a nod in Joy Division's general direction. Frontman Sean Kilfoyle's deadpan male vocals paired with Amalie Bruun's weightless pipes round out this wistful affair. It's a pleasantly familiar sampling of microgenres that bounces and drifts - often quite aimlessly - without a snag, toeing the line between dreamily derivative and flat-out lazy.
