CSNY Déjà Vu

Still rocking in the free world

In 1991, as the Gulf War raged, the stage for Neil Young’s Ragged Glory tour was adorned with an outsized microphone tied with a yellow ribbon. Fifteen years later, as Young hit the road with Crosby, Stills, and Nash for their 2006 Freedom of Speech tour, the prop was back. That we’re in Iraq — again — makes Young “crazed.” Not all CSNY fans feel the same. Directed by Young (as his alter ego Bernard Shakey), this documentary sees the foursome dusting off Vietnam-era protest songs and dipping into Young’s excoriating ’06 solo album, Living with War. Upon hearing that record’s “Let’s Impeach the President,” one Atlanta crowd showers the stage with boos and obscenities. But if some think “four balding hippie millionaires” should just can the politics and play the hits, that’s not how Neil rolls. If three-quarters of CSNY are a bit doughy and/or dweeby these days, at least Young is still rocking in the free world. 96 minutes | Kendall Square
