Review: The Big Year

The Big Year falls short

Dorky, obsessed with trivia, and badly dressed — birders get a bad rap. Nor will David Frankel's insipid and inept comedy about Audubon's annual bird spotting competition help much. Starting with the unctuous voiceover narration by Jack Black. Not that it matters, but if he's a character in the story, how does he have omniscient insight into the other characters' thoughts? Can he read minds? Certainly it wouldn't take much ESP to plumb these stereotypes. Black plays Brad, a stumblebum who, as his dad (Brian Dennehy) points out, has lost his job, scholarship, and marriage due to his birding obsession. He's up against Stu (Steve Martin), a workaholic trying to cut himself free of his company in order to fulfill his dream; and reigning champ Kenny (Owen Wilson), who is willing to ignore his clingy wife to remain number one. Why do they do it? Maybe for the thrill of unexpected beauty, but you won't find that, or any laughs, here.

  •   REVIEW: MY WEEK WITH MARILYN  |  November 21, 2011
The Prince and the Showgirl (1957) didn't distinguish the résumés of either Marilyn Monroe or Laurence Olivier. It did mark a highpoint in the life of 23-year-old Colin Clark.

The diametric opposite of the Antarctica-set Happy Feet Two , or at least geographically, Sarah Smith's revisionist Santa Claus tale still delivers the same kind of offbeat holiday animation.
  •   REVIEW: HAPPY FEET TWO  |  November 15, 2011
Lovely to look at despite the 3D, and sometimes bordering on the psychedelic, this crack-brained morality tale blends the sublimely weird and the cloyingly awful as it preaches once again the paradox that you should be true to yourself as long as you are in step with everyone else.

George Clooney puts in what may be his best performance as Matt King, scion of a wealthy Hawaiian family that can trace its pedigree back to the 19th century Princess Margaret Ke'alohilani, descendant of King Kamehameha, and bride of Matt's great, great, etc., grandfather, the haole lawyer Edward King.
