The Blackstone Grill

Watering hole, not hole-in-the-wall

While Faneuil Hall is home to some of the most beloved watering holes in Boston, many locals forget that a few of its pubs have top-notch potential as inexpensive eateries. The Blackstone Grill is surely at the top of the list, welcoming guests with its glossy cherry-wood fixtures, flat-screen TVs, cheap finger foods, and plenty of ale to wash everything down with.

Start with some drinks, and then try an order of Illegal Nachos ($7.95), packed with jalapeños, chopped peppers, scallions, and black olives over a bucket-size pile of crunchy tortilla chips smothered in melted cheese, sour cream, and salsa. Potato skins ($6.95) will also complement almost any alcoholic beverage; the crispy-on-the-outside and tender-on-the-inside potato cups are filled to the brim with melted cheese, chunks of bacon, and chive-sprinkled sour cream.

Lunch-time locals frequently flock here for the turkey Reuben sandwich ($8.95), stuffed with layer upon layer of tender smoked turkey, Swiss cheese, coleslaw, and creamy Russian dressing, served with a side of French fries and a dill pickle. Creative types, however, may prefer the build-your-own Blackstone burger ($7.50), served with your choice of toppings — tomato, onion, lettuce, mushrooms, cheese, crispy bacon, and barbecue sauce — atop a thick beef patty. Still hungry? Add a pot of piping-hot Boston baked beans (50 cents) to any sandwich or burger. Blackstone also serves a wide selection of daily specials for less than 10 bucks.

The Blackstone Grill, located at 15 Union Street, in Boston, is open Monday through Saturday, from 11 am to 2 am, and on Sunday, from noon to 2 am. The full menu is served until around 11 pm. Call 617.523.9396.
