Notes on Passion Pit and the Serious Geniuses

Passion Pit
Wow! PASSION PIT, a sample-heavy juggernaut of hip-tossing post-jams for whom our love has attained liberating levels of transparency (they were voted our Best Music Poll’s Best New Local Act of 2008, and one time, we just flat-out called them “sexy”), have been signed to the ever-foxy FRENCHKISS RECORDS and will be dropping their soon-to-be-eagerly-awaited-but-ultimately-leaked-way-too-early Chunk of Change EP on September 16. Hooray, Passion Pit! Haters (whoever you are) can take solace in the fact that the band must play not one but three shows in one month at Piano’s in NYC, where music goes to have its joy painfully extracted and necropsied. . . . TERRITORIES are wrapping up a breakneck tour of the Midwest with an EP-release show at Great Scott with THIS CAR UP, TRADES, and HOT BOX on July 23 to celebrate the release of their debut EP, Dead Wings, on Windowsill Records. They rock this great mix of Ranaldo-sung Sonic Youth, Unwound, and Blonde Redhead that already has us eager for a full-length sampling. The following night at Great Scott, Brookline’s SERIOUS GENIUSES will serenade the chunky-grindy-howly-post-punk-loving masses with their You Can Steal the Riffs, But You Can’t Steal the Talent, a rock debut to be reckoned with. They’ll be joined by MOVERS AND SHAKERS and GET BEN — this’ll be like looking into the future of local rock, or the good part of the recent past of local rock. Whichevs.
